Generative AI in the hands of hackers will become a more serious threat.

With an AI co-pilot, hackers become ten-fold smarter and faster. They can cut the time it takes to discover a vulnerability by 90% and come up with a new one any time an older one is patched. Unfortunately, because regulation lags behind technology expect to see more hackers in 2024 using AI’s powerful capabilities for a variety of malicious purposes. Some will engage AI as a co-pilot to generate better written, and more convincing and authentic looking emails, landing pages, URLs, and text messages. This will open the door for more non-English speaking malicious actors to get into the game. With the help of AI, for instance, it will be much easier for them to generate not only more convincing and higher quality phishing attacks, but also more successful attacks on a global scale. Other hackers will double down their efforts to flood AI databases with libraries of nefarious codes in order to take advantage of developers who use AI to speed up code development. That’s why it will be more important than ever for companies to be on guard and for developers to carefully vet code libraries and packages before using them – or better yet avoid using AI to download code altogether.

In 2024, expect to see smarter bots enter the scene. Hackers have already figured out how to use AI as a co-pilot to easily build new advanced bot scripts—otherwise known as zero-day bots. Standard bot protection tools will not be able to defend against the growing number and variety of these new AI-generated bot scripts. Today, 30% of internet traffic is driven by bad bots—a number that is certain to rise in the future.
