Data Privacy Day 2026 Exposes a New Reality: AI Is Now the Biggest Risk Multiplier

Data Privacy Day has long been about safeguarding personal information, but in 2026 the conversation has shifted decisively. The biggest threat is no longer just lost laptops, misconfigured servers, or credential theft. It is the rapid normalization of artificial intelligence inside everyday business workflows, often faster than security teams can keep up.

Across enterprises, AI is now deeply embedded in how work gets done, from responding to RFPs and managing customer interactions to analyzing internal knowledge bases. That adoption is accelerating, and with it comes a growing concentration of sensitive data inside systems that were not originally designed with privacy and security as first principles.

“On Data Privacy Day, it’s clear that AI is changing how we handle sensitive data. As AI and automation become part of everyday work, keeping data secure in processes like RFPs matters more than ever,” said Zak Hemraj, CEO and co founder of Loopio. “Last year, 68% of teams used AI in their RFP workflows, and 70% of those teams relied on it weekly. With AI handling more and more confidential business information, the risk of exposure is only getting bigger.”

That risk is not limited to internal systems. Hemraj points to vendors as an often overlooked weak link. “That’s why companies need to go beyond securing their own data and make sure their vendors are held to the same high standards. Protecting data is a shared responsibility,” he said.


One of the most immediate privacy challenges is the rise of shadow AI. Employees, eager to experiment with new generative tools, are frequently bypassing corporate policies and safeguards altogether.


“As organizations continue to grapple with their AI use, shadow AI is the top data privacy challenge that they are facing,” said Chris Mierzwa, senior director of global resilience programs at Commvault. “With new and exciting generative AI offerings coming to market every single day, employees are unintentionally skirting around corporate policies to try these new tools and potentially sharing sensitive information.”


The result is what Mierzwa describes as a massive blind spot for CISOs, one that grows larger as leadership hesitates to invest in enterprise safe AI tools. He argues that organizations must proactively sanction approved AI platforms, establish private internal workspaces, and allocate budgets for secure large language model access to prevent risk from growing unchecked.


For others, the problem runs even deeper than tool sprawl. Nico Dupont, founder and CEO of Cyborg, warns that many organizations still fail to grasp how tightly AI effectiveness is tied to sensitive data.


“The rapid adoption of AI without true consideration for data privacy and security is a huge cause for concern,” Dupont said. “As organizations centralize data to power AI, they are creating valuable knowledge bases that become prime targets for attackers.”


Dupont argues that traditional approaches, including unsecured vector databases, are ill suited for this new era. He points to embedding encryption directly into the AI stack as a necessary evolution to ensure data remains usable for authorized users while being worthless to attackers.


Meanwhile, threats are not confined to data repositories alone. Daniel Pataki, CTO at Kinsta, believes the most dangerous risks facing websites in 2026 are no longer infrastructure failures or bot traffic, but AI driven impersonation.


“What is more concerning is the ability to impersonate human interactions via chat, audio or even video,” Pataki said. “This has given rise to better and more successful phishing methodologies which can endanger websites through gaining access or even ownership.”

These impersonation attacks blur the line between legitimate users and adversaries, undermining traditional trust signals that many security models still rely on.


From the attacker’s perspective, AI has dramatically expanded the available attack surface. Andrew Costis, manager of the adversary research team at AttackIQ, says organizations that lack visibility into where sensitive data resides are effectively operating blind.


“Data has never been more under fire than it is currently,” Costis said. “With the introduction of AI into cybercriminal activity, the number of attack surfaces has increased dramatically, as well as the number of exploitable vulnerabilities.”


Costis emphasizes the importance of adversary emulation to validate defenses against realistic attack paths, while also stressing that foundational hygiene still matters. Patch management, strong passwords, and multi factor authentication remain critical layers of defense even as threats grow more sophisticated.


The complexity of modern data movement only compounds the challenge. Ross Filipek, CISO at Corsica Technologies, points to the sprawl of cloud platforms and interconnected business systems as a growing exposure point.


“In today’s environment where data is constantly moving between clouds, partners, and internal systems, modern platforms are forced to handle increasingly complex data flows across EDI, ERP, and CRM connections,” Filipek said.


Without real time visibility into how data moves and who accesses it, organizations risk losing control entirely. Filipek argues that monitoring and proactive detection must become part of the infrastructure itself, turning platforms into active participants in data defense rather than passive bystanders.


Taken together, these perspectives paint a clear picture for Data Privacy Day 2026. AI is no longer just a productivity tool. It is a force multiplier for both innovation and risk.


Organizations that fail to rethink data security, governance, and accountability in the age of AI may find that the very systems designed to accelerate business become the easiest way in for attackers.
