Digital Trust Becomes Critical for Orgs Managing Certificates and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)

To start 2023, DigiCert launched DigiCert® Trust Lifecycle Manager, a digital trust solution unifying CA-agnostic certificate management and public key infrastructure (PKI) services. We had the opportunity to speak with Deepika Chauhan, Chief Product Officer at DigiCert, to dive into her views on the importance of digital trust, the capabilities of the new Trust Lifecycle Manager platform, and how organizations that embrace the concept of digital trust can position themselves for success.

What is digital trust, and why is it important to the success of an organization?

Digital trust is what enables individuals and businesses to engage online with confidence that their footprint in a digital world is secure. With digital transformation expanding the use cases for PKI, trust has now become the backbone for security in the connected world: for securing users, software, servers, devices, digital content, documents, digital rights, identity and more.

Digital trust is about more than a product or service. It is established upon four key building blocks: 1) Industry and technology standards that define what constitutes trust; 2) Compliance and operations that govern delivery of trust; 3) Unified trust management platforms for certificate lifecycle management of public and private trust; 4) Extension of trust through ecosystems such as connected devices, software supply chains and digital content provenance.

What are some of the challenges of digital trust?

Connectivity and digital transformation have rapidly expanded the surface area of what needs to be trusted and secured. Amid this backdrop, organizations struggle to know where all their trusted assets are, how they are protected and where gaps may exist. The lack of centralized visibility and scalable management leads to service outages, vulnerable endpoints and many other risks. Companies need a way to unify the management of digital certificates, keys and other products used to secure these systems. Enterprises may have hundreds of thousands or even millions of trusted connections within their network.

Describe this new solution. How does it address some of the common challenges with digital trust management?

Trust Lifecycle Manger helps organizations invest in a centralized digital trust infrastructure, bringing together CA-agnostic certificate management and PKI services, with best-in-class public trust, to deliver centralized visibility and control, prevent business disruption and secure identity and access.

The platform brings together two key components:

  • Certificate lifecycle management, to streamline IT operations with certificate discovery, management, notification, automation and integration.

  • PKI services, streamlining identity and authentication with ICA creation and private certificate issuance for users, devices, servers and other IT resources

How do you see digital trust evolving in the year ahead?

Digital trust is becoming more than a nice to have: It’s a strategic imperative. In fact, many organizations are appointing a chief digital trust officer to oversee the architecture and management of this critical need. Companies strategically investing in digital trust are positioning themselves now as stewards of a secure, connected world.
