Ontinue Launches MXDR Essentials for 24/7 Microsoft Defender Operations
Ontinue has launched MXDR Essentials, a managed security service that provides continuous investigation and response across the Microsoft Defender suite.
The service covers endpoints, servers, email, and identities using security controls customers already license. Ontinue says its ION SecOps Platform automates triage, enrichment, investigation, and containment, with analysts in its Cyber Defense Center handling incidents that require expert judgment or customer input.
Customers define rules of engagement that specify which response actions Ontinue can take immediately, when approval is required, and how an incident should escalate. Incident collaboration can take place in Microsoft Teams, reducing the need for security staff to monitor another standalone console.
MXDR Essentials is positioned as a narrower entry point than Ontinue's existing MXDR Core service. Organizations can move to the broader offering when they need additional telemetry, Microsoft Sentinel management, custom detections, or proactive threat hunting, without migrating to a different operating platform or provider.
The service arrives as Microsoft consolidates Defender, Sentinel, and Security Copilot workflows into what it calls an integrated security operations platform. That consolidation can simplify investigation, but it does not eliminate the staffing challenge of maintaining coverage around the clock or deciding when automation should contain an account or endpoint.
For buyers, the critical questions are operational. They should confirm which Defender products are required, how quickly the provider commits to investigate and contain an incident, what evidence supports automated decisions, and which actions remain under customer control. A managed service is most valuable when those boundaries are explicit before the first high-impact alert arrives.
