Surge in Phishing Attacks on Microsoft 365 Users: The Rise of the 'Greatness' Phishing Kit

In the evolving landscape of cyber threats, Trustwave SpiderLabs has identified a significant increase in the use of a sophisticated phishing kit known as "Greatness" targeting Microsoft 365 users. Developed by a threat actor dubbed "fisherstell," Greatness has been wreaking havoc since its inception in mid-2022, offering a phishing-as-a-service platform that enables virtually anyone to launch phishing campaigns for a monthly fee of $120 in Bitcoin.

This alarming spike in Greatness kit usage, observed from December 2023 to January 2024, marks a concerning trend in cybercrime. Although the exact number of victims remains undisclosed, the prevalence and sophistication of the Greatness kit signify a substantial threat to online security.

Innovative Features Fueling the Greatness Kit's Success

What sets the Greatness kit apart is its comprehensive suite of customizable options and anti-detection measures. Subscribers can personalize email elements, including sender names, subjects, and messages, making phishing attempts more convincing. Additionally, the kit employs tactics like randomizing headers and obfuscation to slip past spam filters and detection systems.

Trustwave SpiderLabs highlights that the Greatness kit is not just a tool for credential theft but also capable of bypassing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This is achieved by deceiving victims into providing their MFA codes, leading to a more complete compromise of their accounts.

The Deceptive Operation of Greatness

Greatness operates through a subscription model accessible via its Telegram channel, thus lowering the barrier to entry for cybercrime. The platform generates deceptive emails and attachments that mimic reputable sources like Microsoft, luring victims into a false sense of security. When victims engage with these materials, their login credentials are captured and sent to the attackers.

A noteworthy aspect of the Greatness kit is its ability to hide encoded data within HTML elements, thus evading detection. The variety of attachments, including PDF, Excel, Word, and even QR codes, underscores the kit's versatility in phishing attempts.

Social Engineering: The Psychological Playbook of Greatness

A critical aspect of the Greatness phishing kit's effectiveness lies in its use of social engineering and pressure tactics. The emails crafted by this kit often create a sense of urgency, compelling the recipient to act hastily. Phrases like "urgent invoice payments" or "urgent account verification required" are commonly used to instill fear and prompt immediate action.

Adding to the deception, these emails often spoof legitimate senders and use familiar file formats, further convincing targets of their authenticity. This psychological manipulation is a hallmark of successful phishing campaigns, making the Greatness kit a formidable tool in the hands of cybercriminals.

Guarding Against the Greatness Threat

In response to this growing threat, Trustwave MailMarshal offers protection against phishing emails generated by the Greatness kit. However, the increasing sophistication and adaptability of phishing tools like Greatness underscore the need for heightened vigilance and advanced security measures in the digital domain.

As Trustwave SpiderLabs continues to monitor this situation, the rise of the Greatness phishing kit serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving challenges in cybersecurity and the importance of staying ahead of malicious actors in the digital world.
