Phishing and Ransomware Still Appear To Be Top Cyber Worries In the Public's Mind

A quick Google Trends comparison for the past 90 days shows "phishing" and "ransomware" ahead of the pack versus "supply chain attack" and "DDoS attack" in terms of public interest.


Google Trends analyzes the popularity of top search queries in Google Search across various regions and languages. The website uses graphs to compare the search volume of different queries over time.

This public interest data is echoed by reports by top cybersecurity companies Sophos and Proofpoint:

  • More organizations experienced successful phishing attacks in 2020 vs. 2019 (57% vs. 55%) according to the third-party survey. In addition, business email compromise (BEC) attacks continue to be a serious concern. (Proofpoint - State of the Phish Report)

  • 74% of U.S. organizations surveyed reported experiencing a successful phishing attack in 2020, 30% higher than the global average and a 14% year-over-year increase. (Proofpoint - State of the Phish Report)
